A commemoration on the 100th anniversary of the Russian revolution, the conference will explore:
• The Collapse of Communism – David Pryce Jones, UK author of The War
That Never Was: The Fall of the Soviet Union, 1985-1991, along with former
Ambassador Charles Crawford, and former Foreign Minister Géza Jeszenszky will examine the unraveling of the USSR. How did it happen? Why were Western governments caught flat-footed at the collapse?
• The Revolution in Hungary – Gergely Romsics, Historian at ELTE University, will present a lecture on the impact of the Russian revolution on Hungarian public thinking between 1918-1941. Professor Romsics will examine how this ideological and political shock created long-lasting waves that deeply influenced the Hungarian political elite and the intelligentsia.
• Communism and Society (The Economy, the Arts, and the Intellectuals) – Historian Norman Stone will discuss the attraction of communism to the
intelligentsia.
• Communism and the Arts – Poet, Critic and Strategist Gyula Kodolányi will
discusses the impact of Communism on the arts, first as a revolutionary doctrine, second as a bulwark of state power.
• The Victims of Communism: the Unquiet Graves – Áron Máthé, Vice Chair National Committee on Remembrance (NEB) along with Jaap Scholten, author of the award winning book, “Comrade Baron” will focus on the millions of victims of communism and the need to ensure that their sacrifice and the crimes against them will receive the full weight of history’s condemnation.
